The rich, purple spondylus adds an exotic touch to the handmade silver pendant and sterling silver necklace. In the past, the spondylus shell was used as monetary exchange, but today it is a symbol of peace between Peru and Ecuador. A beautiful piece of silver jewelry, the spondylus gives the contemporary pendant an organic touch. The simple elegance of the sterling silver necklace added to the clean, symmetrical lines of the handmade pendant creates a truly beautiful and unique piece of artisan jewelry.

Purple Spondylus Pendant on Sterling Silver Chain

There’s a hint of colonial Peru in the design of this handcrafted silver pendant and an old-fashioned respect for quality craftsmanship in its making. Hung on a 16” sterling box chain, the 2 3/4" inch long pendant frames deep purple spondylus shell from the warm coastal waters off Ecuador. We feature richly colored spondylus shell in several of our pieces, but were especially pleased to discover silver jewelry made with this less common, but uncommonly lovely, purple spondylus.

Spondylus  (thorny oyster) has been traded south to Peru for at least 3,000 years. Ancient Peruvian people believed the shell symbolized Pachamama, Mother Earth. Their royalty wore elaborate ornaments and neck collars set with patterns of colorful stones and shells, including spondylus. Handcrafted in Peru with .950 sterling silver
